Homework Information Sheet for Year 5 pupils
All pupils in Year 5 are required to complete the following homework every week:
•Reading: At least two hours of reading a week including some reading aloud to an adult on a minimum of three occasions. Please sign your child’s reading diary every time you hear them read / you have discussions about what they have read to themselves. Particularly if your child is a very confident and fluent reader, please check they understand what they are reading – they might well be able to read a hard word confidently, but can they explain what it means? Your child will be rewarded with a house point for their 3 sessions of reading / discussion with an adult. Children who repeatedly do not do this reading homework will be completing extra reading during their break / lunch times. We ask you to encourage your child to read a wide range of texts, including those from Rugby Library, magazines, and newspapers. Please ensure that school reading books and diaries are brought to school every day.
•Literacy homework: Homework is given out on Thursdays. Please learn spellings for a spelling test on the following Thursday. We encourage the children to practise new spellings ‘little and often’. Pupils should complete associated homework to be handed in on the following Monday and should take around 30 minutes to complete.
•Maths homework: Homework is given out on Thursdays and is to be completed for Mondays. This work should take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Mathematical facts (including Multiplication tables and division facts) should be practiced in preparation for a weekly test on Thursday.
•Homework related to other aspects of the curriculum (see over). Pupils are expected to spend about 30 minutes a week completing the following work.
•There may be times when your child is sent home with support materials for you to work on together to consolidate something which they may not have grasped fully in class. This is not required to be returned to school – it is for your use at home.
Please sign your child’s homework.
