What are SATs for?
- SATs measure how a child is doing at the end of primary school and help schools identify strengths and any areas needing support.
- They are not pass or fail tests. Results are used to plan support as pupils move into secondary school.
- Writing is assessed by class teachers throughout the year and is not a timed national test.
- Scaled scores: a score of 100 or above indicates the expected standard for Year 6. Thresholds for greater depth vary year to year.
How you can support your child at home
Simple, regular activities help most:
- Read together for 10 minutes each day and talk about what you’ve read.
- Practise times tables in short bursts.
- Encourage your child to explain what they are learning at school.
- Keep routines consistent: good sleep, healthy meals, calm mornings.
- Reassure your child that SATs are just one way to see what they can do.
"Do your best and stay calm. These tests help your teachers know what support you might need in Year 7. I’m proud of you for working hard all year."
If your child finds the tests difficult
- Tests are designed to stretch all pupils; it is normal for some questions to feel hard.
- If your child has additional needs, please speak to us about access arrangements (for example extra time, reader, scribe or separate room). These are arranged in advance.
