At Bilton C of E Junior School we recognise that Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables children of all abilities to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.

We encourage children to explore ideas and meanings through the work of a range of artists and designers. Through learning about the roles and functions of art, they can explore the impact it has had on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures. The appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts enriches all our lives.  Our pupils should have access to a high quality Art & Design education which is essential for our personal, social and material development.

We want our pupils to:

  • Be engaged, inspired and challenged through the teaching of art.
  • Be equipped with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.
  • Progress through school by beginning to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

We follow a broad and balanced Art and Design curriculum that builds on previous learning and provides both support and challenge for learners.  All classes will have a scheduled Art and Design lesson roughly every two weeks.  Children’s work and pictures of their work will be stored in their sketchbooks which they start in Year 3. This sketchbook is taken with them to be used in Art & Design lessons all the way through to the end of Year 6.   We use the Kapow Art & Design scheme of work.

Health and Safety-  All children will be taught to use materials, tools and equipment safely. The use of tools and equipment will be closely supervised by teachers and sharp tools introduced appropriately.
